HASSAYMPA RIVER PRESERVE BIRD ATCHING & NATURE LOVERS TOUR

Just northwest of Phoenix, Arizona is a Desert Oasis complete with palm trees, a pond that is home to frogs and water fowl, and a mysterious river that rises from the depths of the desert sand. The Hassayampa River Preserve has been a nature lover's and birder's paradise since being purchased by The Nature Conservancy in 1986. Birders have spotted over 280 species of birds. The marshy pond habitat attracts an impressive array of water birds such as the great blue heron, green heron, and pied-billed grebe. Some of Arizona's rarest raptors perch atop the massive trees and dead snags along the river, like the zone-tailed hawk, common black-hawk, and the more common Harris’s and Cooper’s hawks. Lucky birders may sight a red-shouldered hawk or the elusive Yellow-Billed Cuckoo. The large willows and cottonwoods around the pond provide important nesting habitat for the willow flycatcher and brief stop-over habitat for migrating warblers, vireos, tanagers, grosbeaks, and orioles. Other birds include Gambel’s Quail, red-tailed hawk, Gila and ladder-backed woodpeckers, black phoebe, cactus wren, curve-billed thrasher, phainopepla, brown-crested flycatcher, Lucy’s and yellow warblers, and Yellow-Breasted Chat. During the spring and summer, feeders and flowering plants in front of the visitor center regularly attract Anna’s, Black-Chinned, and Costa’s Hummingbirds. You may also see mule deer, javelina, Clark’s spiny lizard, ornate tree lizard, Gilbert’s skink, ring-necked snake, or even a western diamond-backed rattlesnake. This tour is definitely for Birders & Nature Lovers. We will give you several hours to view & photo the wonderful birds and wildlife at the 730 Acre Preserve. Then we will take you into Wickenburg, buy you lunch at the Cowboy Café, and after lunch show you around this Vintage Western Town (including the JAIL TREE & WISHING WELL). Tour length is 7 to 8 hours & does not run on Monday or Tuesday. This is A “REAL TWEET” for bird lovers and nature lovers alike. Top of Page...>

FOUR PEAKS “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN TOUR”

The 61,074 acres of the Four Peaks Wilderness are centered on a major mountain complex with four distinct peaks that frame Phoenix & Scottsdale.  The highest of these peaks is Brown's Peak (7,657'), and the land drops from here down a series of complex ridges and drainages to deep gorges and bluffs to a low point of about 1,900'. The highlands are covered with Ponderous pines and some Douglas firs. There's even a few aspen on the north side of Brown's Peak. Below that you'll find dense thickets of pinon, manzanita and Gambel oak. Below that the grasslands blend into the ocotillo, cholla, saguaro and paloverde growth of typical Sonoran Desert countryside. Canyons that hold water flows often are shaded with sycamores and cottonwoods. This area is pretty dense with the black bears (ONE PER SQ. MILE), but you'll also find skunks, ring-tailed cats, deer, javelinas, mountain lions and coyotes. You'll also want to look out for centipedes, millipedes, black widow spiders, scorpions and rattlesnakes. Legend has it that Jacob Waltz (Arizona's famous "Lost Dutchman") traveled through the Four Peaks Wilderness area to shake off any would-be followers who might be seeking his legendary gold mine in the Superstition Mountains. This may not be quite HEAVEN, but for this ole cowboy it’s PRETTY DANG CLOSE. Travel to the top of the world; see Roosevelt Lake & we’ll make a pit stop at Jake's Corner where you can get a firsthand look see at the local color. So climb aboard and climb the peaks that frame the Phoenix & Scottsdale skyline. You ain’t gotta do it, but u’ll be dang glad you did!! Tour runs 4-5 hours.
